The infratemporal fossa is an irregularly shaped cavity, situated below and medial to the zygomatic arch. It is not fully enclosed by bone in all directions, and it contains superficial muscles that are visible during dissection after removing skin and fascia: namely, the lower part of the temporalis muscle, the lateral pterygoid, and the medial pterygoid. The infratemporal fossa is the skull compartment localized below the temporal fossa and medial to the ramus mandibulae. The point which usually is missed out is that the pterygopalatine fossa is the part of the fossa infratemporalis. Therefore the infratemporal fossa is directly bordered ( temporal fossa & basis cranii externa) or connects via openings ( basis cranii interna, orbit & nasal cavity) almost all other skull compartments. Gross anatomy The infratemporal fossa is the space between the skull base, lateral pharyngeal wall, and the ramus of mandible .

Infratemporal fossa approach to the hypoglossal canal: practical landmarks for elusive anatomy The hypoglossal canal can be consistently reached using the infratemporal fossa approach. Hearing and CN IX to XI can be preserved. The distance from the jugular bulb and roots of CN IX to XI can be used as guideposts. The infratemporal fossa is the region deep to the ramus of the mandible. The infratemporal fossa accommodates the insertion of the temporalis muscle, medial and lateral pterygoid muscles, mandibular nerve [cranial nerve (CN) V-3], otic ganglion, chorda tympani nerve, maxillary artery, and the pterygoid plexus of the veins.
